A friend of mine found !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! car for sale, and there are just so many weird things about it. First of all - is it really an AMG version? The SL 60 AMG sported a 6 litre V8, while the badges on the front wings of this thing say V12 (like on a regular SL 600). Then there's the power figure (and the presence of weird AMG stickers altogether). I don't believe I've ever heard of a 324kW version of the R129. Can any of you help solve the mystery of this car? Is it genuinely a nice find or just a Crack Pipe?

It's a real car - most of the AMG R129's sold were SL60's. Mercedes advertised 375hp but later stated this value was underrated; the true power was closer to around 405-410hp. The seller most likely has the power incorrectly listed or it has some aftermarket modifications.

But the SL60 had a V8, while this has V12 badges. Also, even if power has been increased through aftermarket mofidications, that wouldn't change the value on those AMG stickers under the hood. It says 324kW on one of them and I don't believe I've heard of a version with that amount of power.

It's been imported from Japan.

There is also a 400E AMG car that was Japan only model. AMG/Benz made a few models like this I think. It probably is legit.

Next time I'll try looking at the pictures haha - take a look at this thread here . In it they state that AMG could have tuned an SL600 and the HWA number would have been assigned. I think what you have here is an AMG tuned SL600 with suspension components, wheels, and badging. In another forum I found a poster that stated "I have a AMG V12 SL600 1994 (EX Brunei car), with all the kit and engine upgrade. It is extremely fast - officially tested at 4.5secs 0-100km/hr." An SL600 V12 with AMG massaging. Seems like quite a rare car.

There was an SL73, an SL60, and even an R129 SL55 AMG. Obviously, there aren't too many of any of these models out there.

Depends on any documentation it may or may not have; is it enough documentation to make it feel like a good buy to you? Go for it. Not enough documentation or you just generally feel like it's a phony? Walk away. Maybe you miss out on a "great deal" then, but better to be comfortable in what you're buying than have that nagging feeling you were duped later on.

Or at least that's how I'd think of it.

I couldn't possibly afford it, after all I'm just a university student. It's just a car that intrigued me.

And even if I was in the market for something like this, I have a feeling that this particular one falls strictly in the "too good to be true" category.

This isn't a regular AMG. As Party-vi mentioned, it's probably an SL600 that's been sent to AMG for custom tuning (hence the v12, not the v8). Or it could be a complete CP, made to look like something special.

Mercedes made an SL60 AMG, SL70 AMG, and an SL73 AMG (Zonda engine!)

AMG versions of the R129 SL include: SL55 (V8), SL60 (V8), SL70 (V12), and SL73 (V12).

This is not an SL60 AMG (despite having a 6 litre engine), because that was a V8 engined car. This is most likely a regular, non-AMG SL600 that's been sent for AMG tuning after purchase.
